A Cross Section of the Real Human Brain

Editorial in response to: As teenagers’ ideas of sex become skewed by the internet, a soft-porn director says the answer is to put vice on the curriculum.

Whether my frustration is sparked on this fine morning by the article linked above, or simply because it’s 8:30am on Monday, I’m not completely sure. Although, It’s a fact that I am very tired of hearing about how porn causes unhealthy ideas of sex for children and adults.

First, I believe we are all in agreement when I say that parents need to step away from their favorite television shows and talk to their kids. If children have a warped sexual view, it is because parents have avoided giving them a more realistic one to compare to. Children don’t just wake up, turn on the computer and look up porn. There is this little thing called puberty that causes a child to have sexual urges. If your child hasn’t been given any idea of how to control these urges and what is appropriate, then of course they are going to become deviant.

News flash! Not talking to your kids about sex, or giving them some kind of false information to try controlling them for a couple more years, does not deter their curiosity. They will find outlets to deal with the strong hormones that are being released within their bodies, and you will not find out until it’s too late.

Second, I would like to introduce the rest of the world to the technological age. If your children are under the age of 35, they have at least a basic understanding of computers and the internet. This includes all of you parents out there who think your 2 year old doesn’t know how to use the mouse. If you have decided that the computer isn’t something you should have to learn and monitor, you should also look into T-shirts with the word “Ignorant” screen printed across the front.

There are plenty of very easy programs available for censoring websites. Learning and using one of these programs will keep any unwanted information out of your child’s web surfing experience. Also, use the computer with your kids. Play games, read stories, watch movies, etc… The more you are involved with their learning of today’s technology, the more opportunities you will have to instill values along the way. These same values will possibly stop them from even looking at a pornographic website, if they happen to come across one later in their adolescence.

As for Porn causing unhealthy views of sex for adults, this argument has finally released my floodgate. Let’s note other media which, by equal comparison, warps a sense of reality in the adult mind. I feel an overwhelming urge to point out “Reality TV”.

Take the new hit reality series “Jersey Shore” aired by MTV. The show’s season finale reported a 4.8 rating for the coveted 12-34 viewing audience. For those who aren’t market research nerds like I am, that means that 4.8 million people between the ages of 12 and 34 were watching the show. If viewing porn apparently causes 12-34 year olds to have unrealistic and unhealthy concepts of sex, then “Jersey Shore” doesn’t cause the same 12-34 year olds to act like slutty alcoholics? This must be the case if the same parents believe their kids can watch “Jersey Shore”, but Porn is off-limits.

So, if a warped depiction of acceptable reality like “Jersey Shore” can be labeled in the mind of a 12-34 year old as “fake”, then why wouldn’t the same thing be possible for that age group viewing porn?

There is also the implication in this argument that the depictions of sex in Porn are not reality. As someone who has made the Adult Industry and Pornography their profession, I consider my opinion an expert one. The situations in which sex arises within pornography are often times fictional and fantastic in nature. The physical sex is not. If your personal sex life does not include the acts you witness during sex in pornography, please do not make the mistake of thinking normal people do not participate in the same actions. “Normal” sex is something every individual defines for themselves within the realm of acceptable age limits and legalities. Having the viewpoint that your understanding of “Normal” sex should be standard, is extremely closed-minded and ignorant.

The rebuttal could arise that without displays of “deviant” sexual acts, they would not exist amongst the majority. Here I would like to note that works related to the Kamasutra can be dated back to between the 1st and 3rd centuries B.C.. Yes ladies and gentlemen, that’s before christ. If articles and pictures related to sexual acts were being made in Sanskrit, I think it’s safe to say that open sexual conversation has always existed. So, have fun with that argument.

If you do not like porn, then you do not like porn. Leave those who enjoy the fantasy role-play and sex alone. Consenting action between two adults which does not affect others, in the sexual realm, is that couple’s business. Unless you relish the idea of the public having open rights to judge and manipulate your personal past-times, I think it would behoove you to consider this editorial seriously.
