WRAP What?

WRAP

This is “White Ribbon Against Pornography” (WRAP) week when people put a white ribbon on their cars and homes to raise awareness of the pornography problem.

Bob PetersBob Peters, president of Morality in Media — the group that was instrumental in launching the week-long observance more than 20 years ago — shares another objective of the grassroots movement.

“Specifically to get federal and state obscenity laws enforced,” he states. “The white ribbon is intended to be a symbol of community standards of decency — and part of the obscenity test that the Supreme Court enunciated many years ago involves application of community standards of decency.”

Peters is hopeful the observance will stir the hearts of participants. “My hope is that if we can get more people to do something once a year, that at least some of them will realize that they need to be doing things all year long,” he says.

And those things, he shares, are to take action locally on adult businesses, convince local governments to pass ordinances regulating the businesses, report obscenity to federal and state authorities, and educate the public. The WRAP campaign website offers resources for those who are interested in taking action.

I would also like to announce this as also being “Blue Ribbon Against Ignorance” week (BRAI) when people put a blue ribbon on their cars and homes to raise awareness of the ignorance problem.

Considering the historical standing of sexually based services across the world, it boggles my mind how “Obscenity” is still a term used to encompass all pornography. Even the adult industry has agreed to brand content such as bestiality, child porn, and defecation as “Obscene.” These self-proclaimed “moral” organizations still refuse to see basic sexual freedom as a personal decision for adults. Forget the fact that sexually open minded sections of the world have lower rape percentages, because that obviously has nothing to do with the subject.

Call it anything other than an organization against Pornography. If you are a group who wishes to strengthen the standing regulations on Pornography, then more power to you. Otherwise, it sounds as if you are trying to play this game on the fence. “White Ribbons Against Pornography” – “Specifically to get federal and state obscenity laws enforced.” So you are against a business sector who is already following the specific federal and state laws you want enforced? Yea, let me go grab the nearest WRAP ribbon and brand myself a walking contradiction.
